These are the pancakes I dreamed up for my birthday: thick, fluffy dark chocolate pancakes studded with peanut butter cups and finished with a maple-peanut butter sauce. They taste like a decadent breakfast dessert—rich, chocolatey, and unashamedly indulgent. Perfect for a celebration morning or any weekend when you want something special for breakfast.

I was born just after the holidays, when kitchens are full of leftover sweets. Instead of baking another layer cake that few would finish, I turned those treats into a decadent pancake breakfast. These pancakes start with a whole wheat base, boosted with cocoa and peanut butter in the batter, and then studded with chopped peanut butter cups. They cook up like thick, cake-like pancakes and get a generous drizzle of a simple maple-peanut butter sauce.

The texture is somewhere between a tender pancake and a soft chocolate cake. Each bite offers a warm chocolate crumb and pockets of melty peanut butter cup—pure breakfast bliss for peanut butter and chocolate lovers. Despite feeling luxurious, these pancakes are made with whole wheat flour and simple, natural ingredients, so they’re a more wholesome treat than a slice of cake.

To make them, I adapted my Fluffy Whole Wheat Pancake method by adding unsweetened cocoa and peanut butter to the batter, then folding in chopped peanut butter cups. The pancakes are cooked in a skillet with a touch of oil or butter until golden and set. The sauce is effortless: peanut butter, maple syrup, warm water, and a splash of vanilla whisked until smooth—then spooned over the hot pancakes.

These pancakes are ideal for a weekend breakfast, a birthday morning, or any time you want an over-the-top treat without spending hours in the kitchen. Serve them with extra maple syrup, a pat of butter, or even a few extra chopped peanut butter cups on top. They’re satisfying, shareable, and surprisingly easy to make.

If you try the recipe, I’d love to hear how they turned out—leave a comment or share a photo on social media. These pancakes are a small celebration in themselves: chocolate, peanut butter, and maple all in one stack.
Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup Pancakes
Ingredients
- 1 cup white whole wheat flour (can substitute all-purpose if desired)
- 3 tablespoons cocoa powder
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- a pinch of salt
- 1 cup warm tap water
- 2 tablespoons maple syrup
- 2 tablespoons peanut butter (use a natural variety with just peanuts and salt)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 peanut butter cups, chopped (or 1/4 cup mini peanut butter cups or 1/4 cup chocolate chips)
Maple-Peanut Butter Sauce
- 2 tablespoons peanut butter (natural)
- 1 tablespoon maple syrup
- 1 tablespoon warm tap water
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Place a large skillet over medium heat and let it warm while you prepare the batter.
- In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Stir to blend.
- Add the warm water, maple syrup, peanut butter, and vanilla to the dry ingredients. Stir until just combined, avoiding overmixing. Fold in the chopped peanut butter cups last.
- Grease the hot skillet with butter or coconut oil. Using a 1/3 cup measure for even portions, pour batter onto the skillet to form pancakes. Cook for 2–3 minutes until bubbles form and edges look set, then flip and cook another 2 minutes or until cooked through.
- Whisk together the sauce ingredients—peanut butter, maple syrup, warm water, and vanilla—until smooth. Spoon the sauce over the hot pancakes. Add extra maple syrup or butter if desired and serve immediately.
Notes
I usually manage one or two pancakes myself; these are very filling, so the recipe can serve 2–4 depending on appetite. To feed a larger group, double the ingredients. Leftover pancakes refrigerate well for 2–3 days and can be reheated gently in a skillet or microwave. The recipe was adapted from a basic whole wheat pancake method, with cocoa and peanut butter added for flavor.

Enjoy these chocolate peanut butter cup pancakes for a special breakfast or anytime you want a comforting, chocolatey treat. The combination of whole wheat texture, cocoa richness, and peanut butter sweetness makes them a memorable dish that’s easy to prepare and impossible to resist.
