If you love granola, you’re in good company—it’s one of my favorite pantry staples. But I also understand how easy it is to overdo it when a batch is nearby. This recipe was designed to be satisfying, allergy-friendly, and something you can keep on hand without feeling like you must finish the whole batch at once.
Many store-bought granolas contain tree nuts or peanuts, which aren’t an option for everyone. Using seeds and SunButter makes this version safe for nut-free households while still delivering rich flavor and crunch.
Granola and I used to have a love/hate relationship…
I’m allergic to most commercial granolas because of tree nut and peanut ingredients, so homemade or safe store-bought granola used to feel like a forbidden treat. That restriction often led to overeating when I finally had access to it.
Over time I learned a better approach: regular, mindful exposure to foods I found tempting helped me overcome the urge to overconsume. Keeping a sensible batch of granola on hand and enjoying it intentionally made a big difference.
So, what changed?
Instead of avoiding granola entirely or eating the whole batch in a day, I learned to make a version that fits my needs—nut free, lower in added sugar, and made with ingredients that feel satisfying and nourishing.
Continuous exposure helps reduce the “out of control” feeling
If a food feels irresistible when it’s in your home, allowing yourself regular, planned servings can reduce the power it holds. This granola is a good example: it’s meant to be kept on hand and enjoyed without guilt.
This Oil Free Granola is perfect for everyday enjoyment
SunButter replaces oil in this recipe, contributing healthy fats, vitamin E, magnesium, and fiber—nutrients that a neutral oil would not provide. The SunButter also helps bind the granola into large clusters and gives it a rich, nutty flavor without using tree nuts.
I titled the recipe “Oil Free Granola” to help people searching for oil-free options find it. It’s not a statement that oils are bad—just a way to highlight an alternative that is flavorful and nutrient-dense.

Oil Free Granola is…
- Easy to make
- Full of large, satisfying clusters
- Made with fewer than 10 ingredients
- Allergy-friendly and nut free
- Low in added sugar
- Flavorful and crunchy
How to Make Oil Free Granola with Big Clusters
To get large clusters, bake the granola at a low temperature and press the mixture into a single large sheet on the baking tray so it bakes like one big cookie. After an initial bake, flip and press it again, then finish baking. Let the granola cool completely on the baking sheet so it crisps up before breaking into chunks.
Ingredients in Nut Free and Oil Free Granola
You need fewer than 10 ingredients:
- Oats (old fashioned rolled oats)
- Seeds — pumpkin, sunflower, flax, and chia
- Cinnamon
- SunButter (No Added Sugar)
- Honey
- Mini chocolate chips (or dried fruit of your choice)
Rolled oats are the base of this recipe.
Use old fashioned rolled oats for best texture; quick oats will not hold clusters as well. Choose gluten-free oats if you need the recipe to be gluten free.
Seeds add protein, healthy fats, texture, and flavor.
Pumpkin, sunflower, flax, and chia seeds keep this granola nut-free while adding nutrition and crunch. Use your preferred mix of seeds—hemp seeds are a great addition if you have them.
Cinnamon boosts flavor without extra sugar.
Cinnamon provides warmth and a perception of sweetness without adding sugar, helping keep this granola lower in added sugars than many store-bought options.
SunButter provides fat, flavor, and nutrients instead of oil.
SunButter, made from sunflower seeds, contributes healthy fats, vitamin E, and magnesium. It helps bind the mixture and adds richness without tree nuts.
Honey is the single sweetener used.
This recipe uses only 1/4 cup honey, keeping total added sugar low compared with many granolas.
Chocolate chips or dried fruit finish the granola.
I love mini chocolate chips in granola, but you can swap in raisins, dried cranberries, or chopped dried fruit if you prefer less added sugar.
