East Meets West Burger: A Fresh, Lean Beef Recipe Review
Recently I participated in the “It’s What’s For Dinner Wednesday” project hosted by Beef. It’s What’s For Dinner, a September series that spotlights a different lean beef recipe each Wednesday. Bloggers and home cooks are encouraged to prepare the weekly recipe, post a review, and share their experience. There’s also a drawing for reviewers with a prize package that includes The Healthy Beef Cookbook, grilling tools, mini steak thermometers, and other items to help you shop for and prepare healthy beef meals. The project provides daily recipe ideas and inspiration on its social media channels.
This week’s featured recipe, the East Meets West Burger, gives a fresh twist to a classic burger. The combination of a crisp slaw topping and a sesame-soy mayonnaise made the burger stand out. I enjoyed the slaw so much that I turned extra portions into a side salad to keep the meal lighter. The slaw’s texture and tang paired beautifully with the juicy, seasoned beef patty.
My husband ate his burger in a more traditional way but opted for a thinner sandwich roll instead of a regular hamburger bun. To save time and keep things simple, I used pre-shredded slaw mix and added some chopped green onion directly into the beef mixture for extra flavor. Those small changes made prep quicker without sacrificing the recipe’s intended balance of flavors. My husband gave the meal a big thumbs up; this one is likely to return to our dinner rotation.

Serving Suggestions and Notes
We paired our burgers with grilled sweet potato wedges. I tossed the wedges in a light coating of olive oil and seasoned them with cumin, chili powder, smoked paprika, garlic powder, salt, and pepper before grilling. The spices brought out the natural sweetness of the potatoes and complemented the sesame-soy flavors of the burger. This meal came together quickly, which made it perfect for a weeknight dinner. Leftovers reheated well and the burger plus extra slaw made a satisfying lunch the next day.
Small prep shortcuts—like using store-bought shredded slaw mix, pre-chopped green onion, or a ready-made sandwich thin—helped speed up the process while keeping the dish flavorful and balanced. The sesame-soy mayonnaise adds a rich, savory note that ties the Asian-inspired slaw and the beef patty together without overwhelming the fresh slaw crunch.
Whether you’re cooking for a busy weeknight or preparing a simple weekend grill, this lean beef burger offers a refreshing alternative to the ordinary. The slaw topping provides texture and brightness, while the sesame-soy mayo brings a savory depth. It’s an easy recipe to adapt—try different slaw greens, adjust the spice level, or switch to a whole-grain roll for extra fiber.
Enjoy the recipe and the process of making it your own. And just for fun—here’s a snapshot of my pups taking a break after dinner.
Happy cooking!
