We just returned from a week-long road trip through Washington’s spectacular Olympic Peninsula, and everyone is happily tired. Traveling together in our motor home let us slow down and enjoy the coastline, ancient forests, hot springs, and lakes. Over seven days we visited Ocean Shores (where we celebrated my dear friend Tiffany’s 40th birthday), Quinault Lake, La Push’s First Beach, Ruby Beach, Crescent Beach, the Sul Doc Hot Springs, the Hoh Rain Forest, and finished our journey back in Oregon at our favorite spot, Cannon Beach. The trip was full of simple pleasures: long beach walks, swimming, reading, board games in the motor home, and movie nights. It was a wonderful spring break adventure and it felt great to be home afterward.
Ocean Shores
Ocean Shores greeted us with wide sandy beaches and cool ocean air. We spent time walking the shoreline, watching shorebirds, and enjoying the small-town charm. The day we were there happened to be a celebration for Tiffany’s 40th birthday, which made the visit even more memorable. Even with the breezy weather, the scenery and relaxed pace made Ocean Shores one of the highlights of the route.
Quinault Lake
Quinault Lake offered a peaceful contrast to the ocean. The calm water and surrounding forest create a restorative atmosphere perfect for quiet walks, photography, and stretching out by the shore. It’s a great place to slow down and absorb the scenery before continuing along the peninsula.
First Beach, La Push
La Push’s First Beach is known for its dramatic sea stacks and rugged coastline. The wide, windswept beach invites long walks and tidepool exploration. We loved the raw Pacific views and the quiet moments listening to waves crash against rock formations. It’s an excellent stop for anyone who appreciates coastal drama and natural textures.
Ruby Beach and Crescent Beach
Ruby Beach is famous for its striking rock formations and driftwood-strewn shorelines. We enjoyed exploring tide pools and photographing the dramatic scenery. Crescent Beach offered another peaceful stop with long stretches of sand and room for family walks. Both beaches are excellent stops for anyone traveling the Pacific coast of Washington.
Sul Doc Hot Springs
The Sul Doc Hot Springs provided a welcome dose of warmth and relaxation. Surrounded by nature, these springs are a lovely place to soak and watch the local wildlife. While we were there we noticed salmon jumping up the falls, a vivid reminder of the natural cycles that shape this region.
Hoh Rain Forest
The Hoh Rain Forest is an unforgettable part of the Olympic experience. Moss-draped trees, soft trails, and a green canopy create a magical atmosphere. Walking through the forest felt like stepping into a different world: quiet, cool, and full of life. We took our time on the trails, soaking in the ancient trees and abundant plant life.
Cannon Beach, Oregon
On the return trip we stopped at Cannon Beach, one of our favorite places. The iconic Haystack Rock and the broad, sandy beach make it an ideal spot to end the trip. We enjoyed one last walk on the sand, watching seabirds and taking in the familiar coastal views before heading home.
This road trip through the Olympic Peninsula reminded us why the Pacific Northwest is so special: dramatic coastlines, ancient rain forests, tranquil lakes, and natural hot springs. Traveling in the motor home allowed us to move at our own pace, enjoy family time, and create lasting memories. If you’re planning a similar journey, set aside several days to explore—each stop offers its own beauty and a chance to connect with nature.
