Vanilla French Toast with Homemade Strawberry Syrup

Vanilla French Toast with Fresh Strawberry Syrup — perfect for breakfast any time of day!

Vanilla French Toast with Fresh Strawberry Syrup-perfect for breakfast anytime!

I love when children get hands-on in the kitchen—not just to fetch things or unload the dishwasher, but to actually cook. Teaching kids to cook builds confidence, independence and a healthy relationship with food. This Vanilla French Toast with Fresh Strawberry Syrup is one of those simple, satisfying recipes that is easy to share with little helpers.

My kids have always loved being in the kitchen. They don’t just help; they want to take charge. Recently my son cooked a full dinner for our family while I offered only light guidance from the living room. It turned out delicious, and I was proud of every bite.

My youngest, Grace, is especially skilled at breakfast. This whole recipe — from washing the berries to simmering the syrup and cooking the bread just right — was all her work. She learned to time the syrup so it was ready when the toast came off the griddle and how to watch for the perfect golden brown on each slice.

Grace washed and diced the strawberries, then combined them with sugar and a splash of lemon juice to make a bright, fresh syrup. While the syrup reduced on low heat, she whisked the vanilla-flavored creamer with eggs, dipped each slice of French bread, and cooked them until they were golden and slightly crisp around the edges.

She checked the syrup between batches of toast, gave it a gentle stir, and knew exactly when to remove the pan from heat. The kitchen smelled like warm vanilla and sweet strawberries, and within twenty minutes we were enjoying a delightful breakfast entirely made by Grace.

Vanilla French Toast

Watching a child manage multiple steps — stirring a simmering sauce, flipping toast, and plating the finished dish — is so rewarding. These small kitchen tasks teach timing, focus, and pride in a job well done.

Start kids in the kitchen early. Let them make a mess, sample a few strawberries along the way, and enjoy the creative process. Grace has been at my side cooking since she could safely stand on a chair, and teaching her these basic techniques has become one of my favorite parts of parenting.

Vanilla French Toast Strawberry Syrup

Vanilla French Toast Strawberry Syrup

Ingredients

  • 2 cups fresh strawberries, diced
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 10–12 slices French bread, about 3/4 inch thick
  • 1 cup vanilla-flavored coffee creamer
  • 2 eggs

Instructions

  1. To prepare the syrup, combine diced strawberries, sugar and lemon juice in a medium saucepan. Heat over medium, stirring until the fruit releases its juices and the sugar dissolves. Bring to a gentle boil, then lower the heat and let it simmer for 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until slightly reduced and syrupy.
  2. While the syrup simmers, whisk together the vanilla creamer and eggs in a medium bowl. Dip each slice of bread in the mixture, coating both sides. Melt a little butter on a preheated skillet or griddle over medium heat (about 300°F if your griddle has a thermometer). Cook the bread 60–90 seconds per side, or until the coating is set and the surface is golden brown. Serve warm with the fresh strawberry syrup spooned over the top.

To inspire other families to get kids cooking, California Strawberries ran a Kids Recipe Cook-off with cash prizes. The contest invited children ages 4 to 14 to create simple strawberry recipes with five ingredients or fewer, with an adult (18+) submitting a short how-to video or photo entry on social platforms using the contest hashtag. Contests like this are a great way to encourage creativity and confidence around food.
